The 18-year-old’s remarkable achievement was confirmed by Chhang Dawa Sherpa, expedition director at Seven Summit Treks, from the Shishapangma base camp.

Nima Rinji, climbing alongside Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, reached the true summit of Shishapangma at 6:05am China time. Chhang Dawa reported that the climbers were safely descending to lower camps following their successful ascent.

Nima Rinji’s father, Tashi Sherpa, comes from the remote district of Sankhuwasabha, where he spent his early years herding yaks before beginning a mountaineering career as a teenager. Tashi and his brothers run Nepal’s largest expedition company, Seven Summit Treks, along with 14 Peaks Expedition.

Nima Rinji’s journey to conquer the 8,000-meter peaks began in August 2022, when he became the first teenager to summit Manaslu at the age of 16. His final climb before Shishapangma was Kanchenjunga in June, where he again set a record as the youngest to reach the world’s third-highest peak.

Also Read: Record-breaking Nepali teen targets last 8,000-metre summit

Climbing all 14 of the world’s “eight-thousanders” is considered one of mountaineering’s most prestigious feats. This challenge was first completed by Italian climber Reinhold Messner in 1986, and only around 40 climbers have achieved it since. These formidable peaks are located in the Himalayas and Karakoram ranges, spanning Nepal, China, India and Pakistan.

Pasang Nurbu and Mingtemba Sherpa also joined the elite club in the process. At least a dozen other climbers also reached the milestone of summiting all 14 of the world’s highest peaks on Wednesday, setting national and personal records along the way.

According to outfitters Seven Summit, all 29 members of its expedition team reached Shishapangma’s true summit. In the process Shehroze Kashif recorded his name as the youngest Pakistani and Alasdair Scot Mckenzie of France the youngest European to achieve the feat, the outfitters SST said in its social media post.

Naoko Watanabe became the first Japanese woman to do so, Alina Pekova the first Russian, Ko-Erh Tseng the first Taiwanese and Adrian Laza the first Romanian to complete the challenge. Other climbers of the SST team completing the 14-peak feat were Mario Vielmo (Italy), Dorota Lidia Samocko (Poland).

The ascent of Shishapangma saw Albanian alpinist Flutura Ibrahimi count to 13 top peaks, Iran’s Afsane Hesami Fard (11), India’s Arjun Vajpai (8). Famous Norwegian female climber Kristin Harila, along with other Nepali Sherpas Lhakpa Temba, Tenjing, Ongchu, Dawa, Pasang Tenje, Pemba, Rinjin Bhote, Dawa Nurbu, Lakpa, Phurba, Dendi and Dipen Nuppa Bhote also summited Shishapangma.

Timeline: Nima Rinji Sherpa’s 14-peak feat

Shishapangma (8027m) – Oct 9, 2024
Kanchenjunga (8586m) – June 8, 2024
Makalu (8485m) – May 4, 2024
Annapurna I (8091m) – April 12, 2024
Cho-Oyu (8201m) – Oct 6, 2023
Dhaulagiri (8167m) – Sept 29, 2023
K2 (8611m) – July 27, 2023
Broad Peak (8047m) – July 23, 2023
Gasherbrum II (8035m) – July 19, 2023
Gasherbrum I (8068m) – July 18, 2023
Nanga Parbat (8125m) – June 26, 2023
Lhotse (8516m) – May 24, 2023
Everest (8848.86m) – May 24, 2023
Manaslu (8163m) – Sept 30, 2022

Looking ahead, Nima Rinji is determined to change the perception of mountaineering in Nepal, advocating for it to be recognized as a serious athletic pursuit.

“I want to elevate mountaineering as a professional sport,” he told the French news agency Agence France-Presse before setting out for Tibet on the Shishapangma mission.

Inspired by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first to summit Everest alongside Sir Edmund Hillary, Nima is also deeply committed to sustainability. Climbalaya Treks and Expeditions confirmed that the 33-year-old climber from Rolwaling, Dolakha district, reached the summit in the early hours of Wednesday.

Dawa Yangzum holds several notable records in the mountaineering world. She is the youngest woman to summit K2 and the first Nepali woman to climb Annapurna I without supplemental oxygen. In 2014, she was one of three Nepali women to summit K2 as part of the Women for Change Expedition.

Her achievements go beyond climbing. Dawa Yangzum has led scientific expeditions on Everest for National Geographic in 2019, 2022, and 2023. She also holds the female speed climbing record on Makalu, completing the climb in just 20 hours.

Dawa Yangzum was the first woman to reach the true summit of Manaslu during the autumn climbing season. In addition to her personal accomplishments, Dawa Yangzum is a pioneer in mentoring young women interested in mountaineering, providing them with gear and training. As the first Asian woman certified as an IFMGA/UIAGM mountain guide, she plays a key role in empowering the next generation of climbers. She also serves as the second vice president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

Achievements of Nima Tenji and Dawa Yangzum offer a momentary uplift for the mountaineering community, which has been recently rocked by tragedies.

On Tuesday, ExplorersWeb reported a heartbreaking incident on Jannu East (7,468m), where American climber Mike Gardner tragically lost his life during a descent. His partner, Sam Hennessey, had to call for help from a nearby French team.

The French climbers, Benjamin Vedrines, Leo Billon, and Nicolas Jean, had just turned back from their own summit attempt on Jannu East due to Billon falling ill. While rappelling down the mountain, Vedrines spotted Hennessey signalling for help. It was then that they learned of Gardner’s fatal fall. Despite descending together, the climbers could not recover Gardner’s body, only finding traces of his clothing.

It came a day after five Russian climbers perished on Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh-highest peak at 8,167 metres. A helicopter search team discovered the bodies of expedition leader Alexander Dusheyko and his companions at 7,100m, following their disappearance during a summit push. Preliminary reports suggest that the climbers may have fallen from 7,600m along the treacherous traverse under the summit ridge, possibly due to a slip or avalanche.

Related Images:

Dawa Yangzum Sherpa has made history as the first Nepali woman to summit all 14 eight-thousanders, achieving this remarkable feat with her ascent of Shishapangma.

[14
60,103
post-2697","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-mountaineering","tag-shishapangma
["News
News
Mountaineering","Shishapangma
Mountaineering","Shishapangma
[:en]With numerous noted peak ascents already under his belt, Nima Rinji Sherpa has declared his mission to 'inspire a new generation and redefine mountaineering's future.' Photo: 14 Peaks Expedition[:]
["GET
