After a four-year hiatus, the Godavari Running Festival is making its highly anticipated return to the Godavari football grounds in Lalitpur this Saturday. It promises to be bigger and more thrilling than ever.
Launched a decade ago with the simple goal of promoting an active, outdoor lifestyle, this fun-filled festival has become a key fixture in Nepal’s outdoor sports scene. Today, it attracts a vibrant mix of runners, adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts from all corners.
This year’s festival features an expanded lineup of events, innovative new challenges and a growing number of participants, ensuring an unforgettable experience, according to the organisers Basecamp Outdoor Lifestyle.
Alongside the 30K and 15K trail races and the 5K and 2K Yeti Obstacle Runs for adults and kids, the seventh Godavari Running Festival will feature exciting new activities. The Yeti Run, an off-road challenge, includes a mud crawl, rope climb, wall, slides and tyre flips. Festival Co-founder Paresh Shrestha announced that there will be 3-on-3 basketball games and bouldering to attract a broader audience.
More than 400 participants are expected at the seventh iteration. The event has gained attention from both local and international runners, including elite ultra-runners, raising its prestige. “We’re thrilled by the growing interest, especially from international runners. It shows we’re on the right track,” Shrestha said.
While new additions bring new logistical challenges, the organisers remain confident. “Expanding events means rethinking everything—from safety management to route design,” he said. “But we’re committed to creating a festival everyone can enjoy, whether you’re a competitive runner or just here for fun.”
The festival routes, centred around the scenic Godavari area and Phulchowki Hills, are designed to offer both technical difficulty and enjoyment, Shrestha explained. Steep climbs and forest trails challenge serious runners, while accessible paths cater to families and beginners.
The festival’s growth over the years stems from local engagement and international partnerships. Collaborations with local schools like St. Xavier’s and sponsorships from global brands such as La Sportiva and Suunto have elevated the festival’s profile.
“We’re building a community-focused event with strong local ties while also positioning Godavari as a prime destination for outdoor sports,” he said, assuring that there would be adequate safety measures in place to ensure a smooth experience for all.
Safety remains the top priority, particularly in the festival’s more technical sections, he continued. Medical stations, hydration points and clear signage and marshals will be placed throughout the route to guide and support participants. “Our goal is for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable experience from start to finish,” he emphasised.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, the festival enforces waste management policies, bans single-use plastics, and promotes ‘Leave No Trace’ principles.
The event also boosts the local economy by supporting businesses, vendors and tourism. “We’re proud to contribute to the local economy and support the Godavari community through this festival,” Shrestha said.
As excitement builds, the Godavari Running Festival promises a day of adventure, fitness and community spirit, inspiring both seasoned athletes and newcomers while making a positive local impact.
